Happy Leap Day!

I hope you all are enjoying your Leap Day today! It only comes once every four years--so soak it up! My family had a little tradition of writing down what we were doing that year (ie: school, friends, age...) and making predictions of what we'd be doing the next time Leap Year came around. It was always fun to look back to see what we had written--and look forward to another four years!

It has felt like a crazy few weeks here in the Crane household. Everyone (except me, thank goodness!) was sick--including Rich who thinks he's "unbreakable." In fact, Rich got it the worst with a little strep plus flu symptoms and double ear infections. James is still teething which equals little sleep at night. Rich was gone for nearly a week on business (including Valentine's... bummer). All that plus New Beginnings and all the little everyday things that pop up. So here are some pictures and videos of some of the more fun and creative things we have been up to.

Rich's company held a meeting at Incredible Pizza and afterward invited the families to come have dinner and play. This place is incredible! (Think Chuck E. Cheese times 5). We had a pretty good time racing cars, miniature golfing, bowling, and running around. For valentine's day some of the ladies in the ward planned a party--there were at least 16 kids (aged 4 and under). Talk about a mad house! I totally forgot my camera... but did manage to take a picture of the snack I brought...James has also been walking... he can get up to 4 steps before he falls. Most of the time he'll just stand there forever and then decide to crawl instead. Here is my poor attempt to catch this feat on video.

(disclaimer: no children were harmed in the making of this film... I know it looks like he fell but I did catch him)

And while we are speaking of James... this is his new favorite place to play. Several times a day I find him playing in this drawer.

My boys like to find little places like that to hide and play in. The other day I heard a loud CRASH in the boys room to find William falling through the blinds.I'm still not sure how he managed that. We had a nice talk about not playing on the window sill anymore. Luckily mini blinds are super cheap.
Here's another instance of William hiding...

If were paying close attention you may have caught bits and pieces of the BYU fight song that William was singing. He's pretty goofy. Here is more evidence:

I mentioned New Beginnings. Our theme was something like "Ewe are loved." So I searched high and low for a sheep cookie cutter. No such luck. Here is what I came up with instead:

I had a fantastic time scouring the store for things I could use for my sheep! I almost didn't put the legs on but William informed me that they "need legs so they can walk." Pretty cute sheep if I do say so myself.

I just can't say enough how blessed I am to have boys who play together nicely (for the most part). They just love to make each other laugh:

Sorry for another long post. I just hope that spring gets here soon so we can get out and play!

a love story

How did you meet your spouse? We were in the same Family Home Evening Group at BYU my junior year. This is probably a good thing because we were forced to see each other every week. Rich claims that he tried going after me the entire first semester but I was a little clueless... and I had another boy after me as well (who happened to lived directly across the hall from Rich and later married my roommate). The next semester I was more interested but he had decided to "move on." The reality was that he still liked me.

Where did you go on your first date? And who asked who out? Rich asked me to go with him to the Homecoming dance at the Utah State Capital. My roommates and I were planning a How To Host a Murder and had invited Rich's apartment. I needed to update Rich on some plans but he had left FHE a little early. I ran into the hall after him and he asked me to go with him to the Homecoming dance. I was in shock because I thought he was going to ask my roommate. It was a pretty awkward date to say the least. We doubled with his brother. To me it seemed that Rich and Bob talked to each other the whole ride up there and back (Bob's girlfriend lived in SLC so it was just the three of us in the car most of the night). Rich says he was using his "best material" on me and I still wouldn't say a word. I still don't believe that part. Another reason could have been that the night before I had gone to Homecoming with all my roommates and another apartment of boys--it was much more comfortable. (This is a picture of our first date.)

How long have you been together? Oh let's see. We started dating the first of March 2002. So it's been about 6 years.

Who eats more? I'd like to say Rich, although we're getting more even as the years go by. I snack a lot more so in the grand scheme of things it is probably me.

Who said I love you first? Rich did. As I recall we were sitting in his apartment in Provo and he asked "You know I love you right?" I wasn't quite sure how I felt and didn't want to use the "L" word until I knew for sure, so I just said, "Yup." I don't really remember the first time I said it back...

Who is taller? Rich by about 4 inches. We're both shrimps but we have surprisingly tall children.

Who sings better? I guess me. Rich writes songs though--several for me and makes up songs with the boys all the time.

Who is smarter? Is this a trick question? It depends on the subject. We both have our areas of "expertise." But let me tell ya, never play a trivia game with Rich. He has so many crazy bits of trivia stuffed in his head that you wouldn't believe it!

Who does the laundry? When we were first married Rich did because I worked and he was in school. Now I do. It's a good thing too because Rich thinks that if a shirt is old and won't bleed then it's considered a white. This includes red shirts. That just doesn't fly in my book. I do NOT like folding laundry though! I often let a load sit in the dryer for days.

Who does the dishes? We both do... and we both hate it. Rich is really good about hand washing the pans for me though.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? If you are laying down on the bed then I sleep on the right. Funny story about that. On our honeymoon Rich put our stuff in the room. My stuff on the right and his on the left. My mom slept on the left and I guess I always assumed that I would I guess. So that whole week that's how we slept. Turns out that Rich had randomly put our stuff in the room. He had wanted to sleep on the right. By the time we figured this all out, months later, it was too late and we had gotten used to "our" side of the bed.

Who pays the bills? I do. And I like it. I could go on a shopping spree and Rich would never know (of course, that doesn't really happen that often... remember? I'm cheap.)

Who mows the lawn? Rich. I haven't mowed the lawn since high school and that's okay with me.... especially with these humid Oklahoma summers.

Who cooks dinner? I do but I love it when Rich does. He sometimes claims that he can't cook but really he doesn't even need a recipe--he can throw stuff together and make a mighty good tasting meal. Oh and his omelets are to die for.

Who drives when you are together? Rich does. I'm in charge of keeping the kids happy and I have an easier time hopping in the back seat if needed.

Who is more stubborn? Oh me for sure. No question.

Who is the first to admit when they're wrong? Again, no question... it's RICH. I hate admitting when I have been wrong (goes back to that stubborn thing). I rarely do... but perhaps that is because I'm rarely wrong :)

Who's parents do you see the most? Rich's. They only live 20 minutes away from us so we see them at least once a week. It's nice to have family nearby. I'm trying to convince at least one of my sisters to move close. We love visiting my parents though and can't wait till we see them this summer.

Who kissed who first? Rich kissed me. I knew that Rich had sort of started dating this other girl (who I happened to know from my ward the year before) yet he was still flirting with me. I had a late night class that he picked me up from every week as well. I just couldn't understand him--why was he dating someone else and flirting like mad with me? So, I finally got the courage to go over to his place (down the hall) and find out what was up. (Seriously, it took me weeks and tons of prodding by my wonderful roommates.) Once over there I was still having a really hard time bringing the subject up, but eventually asked, "what's up with us?" He basically told me that he had liked me the whole first semester and had tried dating girls... but they just weren't me. Several times he mentioned he'd like to kiss me and finally he said, "so you better stop me if you don't want this," and then went in for the kill.

Who proposed? Rich, of course. We had dated for 2 months before the semester ended. I still had 2 years of school left and Rich graduated. We both went home for the summer. He came to visit me in California sometime in July and we had decided that we would date other people when school started (he would be at OU getting his masters and I was still at BYU). After he got on the plane to head back to Oklahoma we both realized we didn't want to be without each other. I flew out to Oklahoma a month later. During this trip we talked about marriage... but didn't have an "official" proposal--no ring. I went back to BYU and changed my major so that I'd only have 1 year left to graduate. At the end of September he came out to Utah for his grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary. I picked him up from the airport and we hung out all that day. We watched a movie in one of the classrooms on campus and then walked back to my apartment. He asked what I wanted to do. I didn't really care... which I think was driving him crazy. We finally decided to go up to this outdoor theatre that looks like a castle. The previous March we had danced there under the stars. Rich began to tell me that he was sorry that he didn't have this surprise he had promised me but that he had another one. He then asked when I wanted it. Well, we hadn't been back to the apartment and I didn't think he had anything with him so I just said, "I don't care. Whenever." Again. I think this was driving him crazy. All of a sudden, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! It was wonderful! I was completely surprised.

Who is more sensitive? I am. Don't have much more to say on that subject.

Who has more friends? I do--although Rich is more friendly. Rich thinks that it's crazy that I have friends that I've known since I was 3 years old. I mean, William is 3... weird to think that he might know some of his friends for the rest of his life. Anyway, I think I'm just better at keeping in touch... probably a by-product of moving as a kid. Neither of us is very social though so we still have yet to make "couple" friends here.

Who has more siblings? I have 3 sisters and a brother... and so does Rich.

Who wears the pants in the family? I'd like to say that we are equal opportunity pants wearers. Rich is really good about letting me have my way though :)

I tag: Elise, Amy (this can be your first entry on the blog that you ARE going to start...) and whoever else wants to play.

i heart valentines day

I don't know why... but I love Valentine's Day. Well, all of February up to--and including--Valentine's Day. I love to browse the valentine aisles at any store I come across. I just can't get enough of all the cute hearts and cheesy gifts. I love that everything is pink or red or white. I love making heart shaped sugar cookies and frosting them perfectly pink. When this obsession began I don't know.
Growing up I always longed for a "special valentine." Every year I would write in my journal something to the effect of "No special valentine this year... maybe next year." And, of course, that never happened. But I have a few fond memories anyway.
Every year in our family we drew names and made a valentine for them. I don't know why my mom started doing this. The only thing I can think of is that it took us so long to make just one valentine that she decided one was enough. Who knows. My sister, Amy, drew my name almost every single year. Seriously. From the time I was around 9 (maybe before that?) through high school. She has always been a seamstress. So when she was 7 or 8 she made me a little red, heart-shaped pillow. Of course, she used all the batting on a pillow she had made for her school teacher and mine ended up stuffed with cotton balls--nice and lumpy. I still have that pillow! I'm sure that Amy thinks I'm ridiculous for keeping it. But how could I throw it away?
In high school, a bunch of friends invited the boys we hung out with on a treehouse breakfast date. We probably had just as much fun planning it as we did actually on the date. My freshman year of college some of my roommates and I decided to ask some boys from our ward on a date. We had dinner served to us by our friends and went ice skating. Super fun. Another year at college we serenaded our roommate and her fiance with "their song." In a resturaunt full of people... not embarassing at all. One of my favorite college valentines memories was "personalizing" our candy conversation hearts. Oh man were those hilarious! I just wish I could remember what we wrote. (Lori do you still have them? Yes! go here)
And now I finally have my "special valentine"--and never have to worry about finding one again. Rich always thinks of something wonderful for us. And because William and James are not taken yet, this year I have three valentines. I am one lucky girl.
But, you know, I've come to realize that, for me at least, Valentine's is more than having that "special" one. It's more than buying expensive flowers and jewelry. It's about showing people you love them. If I could I would send each of you a valentine's card... but, alas, I did not. So just imagine me giving you a great big hug and know that:
I love you!

jeanine at random

I've taken up the challenge for random thoughts about myself. We'll see how many I can get.

1. Rich was my first kiss.
2. Rachelle has never seen us kiss and we tell her that we only do it once a year on New Years.
3. I love to read... if I really get into a book I'll finish in a week no matter how long it is.
4. I enjoy reading young adult fiction.
5. On a whim I entered a pie contest a few years ago and ended up winning first place.
6. I've had the "roommate switch" pulled on me... (love ya Tanya and Brandon!)
7. I've had 2 emergency c-sections.
8. The best job I've ever had was working for HR at the MTC.
9. In high school I once drove toward oncoming traffic in the shoulder of the freeway.
10. I enjoy putting things together. If I can use a screwdriver or hammer I'm pretty happy.
11. I like to read (and follow) directions. When my in-laws get a new game no one will play until I read the directions and tell them how.
12. Getting mail (real mail) is one of my favorite things in the world!
13. There are three Jeanine's in my ward (I was the first). The first thing we all asked each other was how we spelled our name. We each have a different spelling.
14. My lease favorite chore is cleaning the bath/shower.
15. I love to scrapbook, although I haven't found time to do it lately.
16. My secret shame is that I like Ace of Base.
17. I love lists--sometimes I will write things on my list that I've already done just so I can cross it off. If I don't write something on my grocery list I will forget it.
18. Often I can't form a sentence without using the word "like". It's a horrible habit.
19. I'm cheap... but let's call it frugal.
20. I love to be organized but still find my house in a constant state of clutter... partly due to my pile habit.
21. My hair has always been straight but since I've been pregnant it has a little bit of wave to it (at least when it's wet).
22. My favorite color is purple.
23. I play the flute.
24. I wish I could play the piano.

Well, that's all I can think of right now... Katie, I don't know how you thought of 50! Here are some that Rich came up with about me:

25. Your second toe is longer than your big toe. Freakish
26. You are the fastest reader I’ve ever met.
27. The only vegetable you like is corn. (Okay this is NOT true)
28. The only time you enjoy listening to my music is on the iPod when you’re running because it’s fast.
29. You talk in your sleep sometimes.
30. You have a secret crush on Chuck and Jim, with Jack (Johnson or Dr. Jack, your choice) coming in at a distant third.
31. If you were to fight an American Gladiator, it’d be Crush.
32. The whole youth program in our ward drives you a little crazy.
33. Your weapon of choice is your foot in my face.
34. You don’t love William and James more than me, but you love them differently (what does that mean?).
35. If you could visit anywhere in the world, it would be England (at least that’s what I think).
36. You’re still in denial that Michael Buble is gay.

If anyone wants to take up the challenge... feel free!

deceptively delicious--part 2

Once again, in my effort to branch out and eat more veggies I took up a challenge. My wonderful sister Amy sent me this recipe--guaranteeing that if I tried it not only would I love it but that I wouldn't even know I was eating broccoli. So, last night I went for it. I certainly knew I was eating broccoli--by sheer fact that I could see it. But, let me tell you, my taste buds didn't know I was eating the horrible little trees. Yes, Amy, I did love it. I don't know if I love broccoli yet but it's a start. Here's the recipe for anyone who wants to try it... broccoli lovers and haters alike:

Bacon Broccoli Salad
2 bunches of broccoli (cut into small pieces--you don't want big florets. They should be pretty small)
1/4 - 1/2 red onion chopped small
10 strips bacon (or the real bacon bits... it's much easier)
1 cup sunflower seeds

dressing:
1/2 cup mayo
1/4 cup sugar
2 TB red wine vinegar

Pour dressing on salad. Mix. Chill. Enjoy!
