A few weeks ago we got an invitation to come be a part of the student council oath of office ceremony. I didn't quite know what to expect for an elementary school but it was better than I could have imagined. They had a local district court judge (Jerry Wiese) come to do the honors. He called each representative up to the stage in front of the 4th and 5th graders.

They raised their right hand and repeated this oath: "I, William Crane, do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully execute the office of Representative of Heckethorn Elementary School for the 2014-2015 School Year, and will, to the best of my ability, fulfill the duties and obligations of my office, and work for the betterment of my school, my community, and my country. I commit to do that by serving and respecting the students, the administration, the faculty and the staff of Heckethorn Elementary School. I will work hard, set a good example, and remember that as a leader and representative of others, I have great obligations and responsibilities to others."

The Judge then spoke to the student council telling them that people voted them into office because they are well liked... but now being well liked or popular doesn't matter. Now they have to work and serve the students. He challenged them to make a goal for themselves of something they could do to improve their school. Then he reminded them that people know and like them--but not everyone at the school has a friend. He asked them to look around and find someone that looks lonely or is bullied and to try to become that person's friend by the end of the year promising them that if they did that they would make a difference. That person would be happier, they themselves would be happier, and in turn the entire school would be a happier place.
I'm glad that William has the opportunity to serve and get outside of himself. So far he has really enjoyed it and is already talking about doing it again next year.
