11 years and counting

This year Rich and I celebrated our anniversary a day early by eating at the "Top of the World" restaurant at the Stratosphere.

The food was delicious and once the sun set the view was gorgeous.  (While the sun was still up it just looked like a dirty city.)  People pay to jump from the top of the Stratosphere and we saw several people fall past the window while we ate.  Scary!   The entire restaurant rotates and it took us about an hour and a half to circle completely around.

We had such a nice night together doing something a little out of the ordinary.   I think our life together has turned out a little differently than we thought 11 years ago... probably better than we could have imagined!

White Elephant

Rich and I were invited to a White Elephant party this year.  We had a great time (and got voted for the worst present given.)  I think that's debatable though because we came home with this guy:

That's right.  A real. live. lobster.

The boys thought he was awesome and couldn't get enough of him.  They named him Pinchy.

Alexander was not too happy about his brothers picking up Pinchy.

Sunday night we took him over to our friend's house and cooked him up (along with some steaks and chicken) for dinner.  The boys were really interested in the boiling of Pinchy but didn't like the taste of him so much. The rest of us found him to be rather tasty.

Most memorable gift ever.  We'll see it we can beat it next year.

I have loads and loads of things to catch up on... and it might not happen until after we get moved.  But in the meantime....

Happy Anniversary Rich!  It has been a wonderful 9 years!  I love you so much!

Weekend Fun

Our move was put off... again.  Because I can't stand to be in our home anymore--surrounded by boxes and reminded that we are still here for another week--we've been trying to do stuff out and about as much as possible.

Friday morning we picked up Lisa and headed to the zoo.  We decided to see the girraffes and zebras since I can't remember the last time we saw them.  We lucked out and there was a giraffe that came right up to the fence.  The boys thought it was awesome.

(a picture of me with the boys... doesn't happen too often)

It was fun to go to the zoo again... and to bring Aunt Lisa along with us!

Rich and I planned on getting away together for our anniversary (which was last month)... but it kept getting pushed back because we were supposed to be moving.  After the bomb dropped Thursday morning that we wouldn't be moving on Friday afterall, we decided that we had to leave.  Besides, we only have a limited number of weekends before baby #4 arrives.

Rich made plans for us to stay in McAlester so that we could dine at Pete's Place in Krebs.  It was a nice drive, great food, and fun to get away by ourselves.

In front of Pete's Place

Wish us luck this week that we can finally get moved!

Pops!

Well, we finally made it down to Pops.  I have been wanting to go there for a long time and we finally got the chance!

The food was delicious... and I've never seen so much soda in my life!  Our waitress asked us if we were married and then told us that we were the happiest married couple she'd ever seen.  (Then she told us that she saw our rings and thought we might be married to other people?!  Super weird.)

We brought home a small sampling of the {over 500} soda's they had available.

 {Cucumber, Leninade, Marionberry, Butterscotch Rootbeer, Rootbeer, Chocolate}

We tried a few last night... I didn't try the rootbeer {we brought it home for Rich's dad} but it didn't seem to be a favorite.  The Dang! was for Lisa and she said she felt like she was drinking Butterbeer {from Harry Potter}.  Lisa, Rich, and I had a sip of the Cucumber soda. Lisa described the experience as "like drinking grass."  I'll have to let you know how the rest of them taste.

I am so glad that we got a chance for a little different date night!

Update: Chocolate soda--bleh.  Marionberry--tastes like Nyquil.  Leninade--the winner!!  Super good!

Charlie Pierce.  Kyrie O'Connor.  Mo Rocca.  Do any of these names seem familiar?  How about  Peter Sagal?  Or Carl Kasell?
These are the people with whom we spent Thursday evening as we watched the recording of this weeks "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!"

You may find it ultra nerdy that we got tickets for an NPR show... but it was so much fun!  We were grateful that neither Carl nor Peter (yes, we're on first name basis now) were on vacation.  I was especially excited that Mo Rocca was there--pink pants and all.  He's one of our favorite panelists... so funny.  Even their celebrity guest, Delmar Smith, was hilarious.

Waiting for the show to begin...

I'm so glad that Rich got us tickets for my birthday!  It was great to see all the behind the scenes stuff... and it will be interesting to see what got cut out.  My greatest hope is that they somehow managed to capture Rich's laugh... I'll have to listen to the podcast and see!  You should go download it too!

The whole evening was perfect... even if we got drenched in the rain on the way back to the car.

7 year itch?

Not a chance.

{Homecoming 2001}

Rich and I met in September 2001 (on my birthday).  It took him 7 months to get me to date him.  Seven years later we are still going strong.  Happy Anniversary!

texas getaway

This past week, Rich and I were able to get away for a few days. Rich had a work conference in Dallas so I tagged along. (Rich's parents were nice enough to watch the kids!) We stayed in the nicest hotel! We walked around so much that we were sore by the end of two days! I didn't think I was that out of shape! They had little train tracks all over the place, a river walk, waterfalls, and all sorts of fun things.

Rich had to work a booth... so I helped him "pretty it up" a bit.

And next to his booth was the Express Clydesdale's booth. Everyone wanted to get a picture with this beautiful horse! (All night I kept waiting for it to make a mess on the floor... but it never did. Nice!)
Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys safety and former player at OU) was there signing autographs as well.Let me tell you--he was the nicest guy! Rich was super excited and got autographs for himself, the boys, and a few others.

Mike Huckabee spoke at the prayer breakfast on Thursday morning. It was a great speech. Rich had to help with the book signing afterward so I got to meet him.
Thursday night was the big concert... Leann Rimes got sick so Jessica Simpson performed. I've never been a big fan of hers, but she wasn't too bad live. And her band was great!

In addition to all that fun stuff, I got to relax while Rich worked. I took a nap, labeled some pictures, read a book, and wandered around the hotel. It was very nice! Plus I got to take advantage of all the great food that they served! Rich and I were able to escape to the outlet mall nearby and Ikea on the way home. (Ikea = lots of walking = even more soreness!)

The boys didn't seem to miss us at all... when we walked in they just kind of looked at us and went back to what they were doing. At least we know they'll be okay when the baby is born!

the stars at night, are big and bright...

...deep in the heart of Texas.

Back in March, for his birthday, I promised Rich a "weekend getaway for two." Six months later I made good on that promise. Friday morning we kissed the boys goodbye as we left them with Grandma while we headed down to Dallas.

On our way down south we decided to stop by Norman. It was fun to drive past our old apartment and walk around the OU campus. I had forgotten just how green Norman is! I think the highlight for Rich was seeing DeMarco Murray (a running back for OU) walk right by us. My highlight was seeing Rich's thesis in the library.
It had even been checked out a few times!
After a quick lunch we hopped in the car. We had a pleasant drive--with the best company. It was so relaxing to not have any plans! After we arrived, Rich, of course, wanted to work out so we took the stairs down to the workout facility. I wish I had pictures of Rich pumping that iron!

And then for the main event!

I guess we ate dinner first, walked up a busy road (because there's no way we were paying $12 for parking), and then arrived at Rangers Stadium. It's been years since I've been in a Major League Baseball Stadium! So fantastic.

I felt sorry for the Rangers because it must have felt like an away game for them... there were so many Red Sox fans! I couldn't believe it! There was a sea of red everywhere you looked and when everyone should have been cheering, "Let's go Rangers!" we were bombarded with chants of "Red Sox" instead. The only relief was a group of 5 little boys sitting near us, all decked out in Rangers gear, who weren't going to let those Red Sox fans ruin their experience. Every time a fan of the opposing team let out a cheer those boys were right there cheering on the home team with even more gusto! It was great!

The next morning, after a late breakfast, we headed back to Oklahoma and our boys. It was a great date that we'll have to repeat again!

sunny san diego

With our time in California coming to an end, Rich and I took a day trip down to San Diego. Rich has never been down there (except for the few hours at Amy's wedding--and we were on the temple grounds the entire time) and I think that it is so beautiful.
Our first stop was the temple. Neither of us has gone through the San Diego Temple before. It's gorgeous. I especially loved the celestial room and the atrium.
Next we headed down to Old Town San Diego. We stopped by a Mormon Battalion memorial. As we read the plaques it was cool to think that I had ancestors who marched in that battalion. It was such a nice day that we walked around that park for a while before we headed to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.We still had a bit of time so I took Rich over to Seaport Village. On our way, he was excited to see and drive around PETCO Stadium. I have many fond memories of Seaport Village but this will forever remain the shortest! Not realizing that we would need to pay for parking we didn't have much loose change on us. Only 50 cents. Unfortunately that only paid for 24 minutes on the parking meter. After our 9 minute walk over to Seaport Village there wasn't much time to do anything but quickly take a glance (and a few pictures) and race back to the car.It was a good time nonetheless!
The weather was perfect as was the company. Thank you mom for watching our boys while we had a "day date!"

a love story

How did you meet your spouse? We were in the same Family Home Evening Group at BYU my junior year. This is probably a good thing because we were forced to see each other every week. Rich claims that he tried going after me the entire first semester but I was a little clueless... and I had another boy after me as well (who happened to lived directly across the hall from Rich and later married my roommate). The next semester I was more interested but he had decided to "move on." The reality was that he still liked me.

Where did you go on your first date? And who asked who out? Rich asked me to go with him to the Homecoming dance at the Utah State Capital. My roommates and I were planning a How To Host a Murder and had invited Rich's apartment. I needed to update Rich on some plans but he had left FHE a little early. I ran into the hall after him and he asked me to go with him to the Homecoming dance. I was in shock because I thought he was going to ask my roommate. It was a pretty awkward date to say the least. We doubled with his brother. To me it seemed that Rich and Bob talked to each other the whole ride up there and back (Bob's girlfriend lived in SLC so it was just the three of us in the car most of the night). Rich says he was using his "best material" on me and I still wouldn't say a word. I still don't believe that part. Another reason could have been that the night before I had gone to Homecoming with all my roommates and another apartment of boys--it was much more comfortable. (This is a picture of our first date.)

How long have you been together? Oh let's see. We started dating the first of March 2002. So it's been about 6 years.

Who eats more? I'd like to say Rich, although we're getting more even as the years go by. I snack a lot more so in the grand scheme of things it is probably me.

Who said I love you first? Rich did. As I recall we were sitting in his apartment in Provo and he asked "You know I love you right?" I wasn't quite sure how I felt and didn't want to use the "L" word until I knew for sure, so I just said, "Yup." I don't really remember the first time I said it back...

Who is taller? Rich by about 4 inches. We're both shrimps but we have surprisingly tall children.

Who sings better? I guess me. Rich writes songs though--several for me and makes up songs with the boys all the time.

Who is smarter? Is this a trick question? It depends on the subject. We both have our areas of "expertise." But let me tell ya, never play a trivia game with Rich. He has so many crazy bits of trivia stuffed in his head that you wouldn't believe it!

Who does the laundry? When we were first married Rich did because I worked and he was in school. Now I do. It's a good thing too because Rich thinks that if a shirt is old and won't bleed then it's considered a white. This includes red shirts. That just doesn't fly in my book. I do NOT like folding laundry though! I often let a load sit in the dryer for days.

Who does the dishes? We both do... and we both hate it. Rich is really good about hand washing the pans for me though.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? If you are laying down on the bed then I sleep on the right. Funny story about that. On our honeymoon Rich put our stuff in the room. My stuff on the right and his on the left. My mom slept on the left and I guess I always assumed that I would I guess. So that whole week that's how we slept. Turns out that Rich had randomly put our stuff in the room. He had wanted to sleep on the right. By the time we figured this all out, months later, it was too late and we had gotten used to "our" side of the bed.

Who pays the bills? I do. And I like it. I could go on a shopping spree and Rich would never know (of course, that doesn't really happen that often... remember? I'm cheap.)

Who mows the lawn? Rich. I haven't mowed the lawn since high school and that's okay with me.... especially with these humid Oklahoma summers.

Who cooks dinner? I do but I love it when Rich does. He sometimes claims that he can't cook but really he doesn't even need a recipe--he can throw stuff together and make a mighty good tasting meal. Oh and his omelets are to die for.

Who drives when you are together? Rich does. I'm in charge of keeping the kids happy and I have an easier time hopping in the back seat if needed.

Who is more stubborn? Oh me for sure. No question.

Who is the first to admit when they're wrong? Again, no question... it's RICH. I hate admitting when I have been wrong (goes back to that stubborn thing). I rarely do... but perhaps that is because I'm rarely wrong :)

Who's parents do you see the most? Rich's. They only live 20 minutes away from us so we see them at least once a week. It's nice to have family nearby. I'm trying to convince at least one of my sisters to move close. We love visiting my parents though and can't wait till we see them this summer.

Who kissed who first? Rich kissed me. I knew that Rich had sort of started dating this other girl (who I happened to know from my ward the year before) yet he was still flirting with me. I had a late night class that he picked me up from every week as well. I just couldn't understand him--why was he dating someone else and flirting like mad with me? So, I finally got the courage to go over to his place (down the hall) and find out what was up. (Seriously, it took me weeks and tons of prodding by my wonderful roommates.) Once over there I was still having a really hard time bringing the subject up, but eventually asked, "what's up with us?" He basically told me that he had liked me the whole first semester and had tried dating girls... but they just weren't me. Several times he mentioned he'd like to kiss me and finally he said, "so you better stop me if you don't want this," and then went in for the kill.

Who proposed? Rich, of course. We had dated for 2 months before the semester ended. I still had 2 years of school left and Rich graduated. We both went home for the summer. He came to visit me in California sometime in July and we had decided that we would date other people when school started (he would be at OU getting his masters and I was still at BYU). After he got on the plane to head back to Oklahoma we both realized we didn't want to be without each other. I flew out to Oklahoma a month later. During this trip we talked about marriage... but didn't have an "official" proposal--no ring. I went back to BYU and changed my major so that I'd only have 1 year left to graduate. At the end of September he came out to Utah for his grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary. I picked him up from the airport and we hung out all that day. We watched a movie in one of the classrooms on campus and then walked back to my apartment. He asked what I wanted to do. I didn't really care... which I think was driving him crazy. We finally decided to go up to this outdoor theatre that looks like a castle. The previous March we had danced there under the stars. Rich began to tell me that he was sorry that he didn't have this surprise he had promised me but that he had another one. He then asked when I wanted it. Well, we hadn't been back to the apartment and I didn't think he had anything with him so I just said, "I don't care. Whenever." Again. I think this was driving him crazy. All of a sudden, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! It was wonderful! I was completely surprised.

Who is more sensitive? I am. Don't have much more to say on that subject.

Who has more friends? I do--although Rich is more friendly. Rich thinks that it's crazy that I have friends that I've known since I was 3 years old. I mean, William is 3... weird to think that he might know some of his friends for the rest of his life. Anyway, I think I'm just better at keeping in touch... probably a by-product of moving as a kid. Neither of us is very social though so we still have yet to make "couple" friends here.

Who has more siblings? I have 3 sisters and a brother... and so does Rich.

Who wears the pants in the family? I'd like to say that we are equal opportunity pants wearers. Rich is really good about letting me have my way though :)

I tag: Elise, Amy (this can be your first entry on the blog that you ARE going to start...) and whoever else wants to play.

wedding tag

My friend Traci tagged me for this new game. Here's what you do: post pictures from your wedding day and then tag 3 friends whose wedding you weren't able to attend. Here are some pictures of my wedding day:

Now, I tag Amy Jean, Rachel, and Tanya.
